- The Government of Malawi is implementing a seven-year Social Support forResilient Livelihoods Project-SSRLP (2019-2027) designed to improve social andeconomic inclusion. Activities under the SSRLP are structuredinto four mutually reinforcing components:· Component 1: ImprovingSocial and Economic Inclusion· Component 2:Strengthening Harmonized Delivery Systems· Component 3: CapacityBuilding and Institutional Strengthening Support· Component 4: ContingentEmergency ResponseComponent 1 covers a set of social protection activities, including (a)the core programs thus shock-responsive Social Cash Transfers (SCT), ClimateSmart Enhanced Public Works (CS-EPWP), and Livelihoods Support; and (b)Financing Scalable Safety Nets) This unique design of mutually reinforcingcomponents effectively contributes to building resilience of the poor andvulnerable. The SSRLP project financing consists of an original World Bankgrant (US$125.00 million equivalent) and Global Risk Financing Facility (GRiF)Trust Fund (US$17.00 million). A First Additional Financing (AF1) in the amountof US$187.5 million, was approved by the World Bank Board of ExecutiveDirectors on May 25, 2022, and became effective on October 19, 2022. Finally, aSecond Additional Financing (AF2) that contributes another US$160.56 millionequivalent, including US$ 110 from the World Bank, and expected developmentpartner contributions to the newly-established Malawi Social ProtectionMulti-Donor Trust Fund.By 2027, the SSRLP aims to reach morethan 778,000 households, out of which258,000 households are under SCT, including emergency cash transfers, and520,000 households under CS-EPWP (60% youths under 35 years and 50% females).590,000 households will benefit from livelihoods interventions across thecountry.The CS-EPWP has been redesigned to explicitlyincorporate climate change adaptation and direct mitigation through creation ofcommunity assets that restore degraded watersheds and enhance agriculturalproductivity.
